Brief Histroy: The school is named after human rights activist Tai Solarin (1922?1994). It is the second university approved in Ogun State, and the 76th approved university in Nigeria. The current vice chancellor, Professor Awonusi, resumed duties in April 2010.
It was proclaimed a full-fledged university by the former governor of Ogun state, His Excellency Otunba Gbenga Daniel on 29 January 2005. The former Tai Solarin College of Education was approved by the Nigerian Universities Commission in 2005 as a university after a thorough analysis and appraisal of its facilities' academic brief.
Professor Olukayode Oyesiku was its first vice chancellor; he succeeded the provost. Dr. Philips Olasunkanmi Tella and Yinusa Oyeneye, its pro chancellors, were formerly the chairmen of the board of governing council.

Currently, the four Colleges in the institution are headed by the following: 1. COllege of Applied Education and Vocational Technology (COAEVOT) - Prof. J. N. Benedict 2. College of Science and Information Technology (COSIT) - Prof. A. A. Arigbabu 3. College of Social and Management Sciences (COSMAS) - Prof. O. Y. Balogun 4. College of Humanities (COHUM) - Prof. Alani Seriki)
It has four colleges: the College of Education and Applied Vocational and Technical Study (the school's largest faculty) COAEVOT, the College of Social and Management Studies COSIT, the College of Humanities COHUM, and the College of Science and Information Technology COSIT.
